Red Shepherd created his 4 famous seasonings in Bakersfield, CA in the 1960’s.
Today, those recipes still remain the same.
Red was a renowned farmer, BBQ king of Kern County, seasoning entrepreneur, and friend to all.
He barbecued for many organizations: The Boy Scouts of America, The Fish and Game, the local Moose
Lodge, Shriners club, different schools, churches, and other charities, he developed and is best known
for the different flavors of his seasonings: Shepherd’s Seasoning. In the beginning, he started the
company by mixing different spices together using a cement mixer and then selling to local family,
friends, farmers, and ‘Mom and Pop’ stores where he lived in the Greenfield/Old River area of
Bakersfield. Since 1960, the business has grown from its humble beginnings to being sold from
supermarkets as large as the Vons grocery stores.
